  TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of the state highway system to Police Officer Frederick G. Maley   PURPOSE: Designates a portion of the state highway system as the Police Officer Frederick G. Maley   SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-r to read as follows: § 344-r. Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the Police Officer Frederick G. Maley. All that portion of the highway system constituting Newbridge Road from its intersection with North Jerusalem Road to its intersection with East Meadow Ave within the hamlet of North Bellmore, town of Hempstead, county of Nassau, shall be known as the Police Officer Frederick G. Maley. § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installa- tion and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section 1 of this act. § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.   JUSTIFICATION: Police officer Frederick Maley was assigned watch at LaGuardia Airport. He was appointed to the Port Authority Police Department on October 9, 1984. He died on July 17, 2022, as the result of cancer that he devel- oped following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Cetner site following the 9/11 Terrorists Attacks.   LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined. This act shall take effect immediately.   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.

        AN  ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
          the state highway system to Police Officer Frederick G.  Maley
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-s to
     2  read as follows:
     3    § 344-s. Portion of the state highway system to be dedicated to Police
     4  Officer Frederick G. Maley. All that portion of the state highway system
     5  constituting  state route one hundred six, also known as Newbridge Road,
     6  from its intersection with North Jerusalem Road to its intersection with
     7  East Meadow Avenue within the hamlet of North Bellmore,  town  of  Hemp-
     8  stead,  county of Nassau, shall be dedicated to Police Officer Frederick
     9  G. Maley.
    10    § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the  instal-
    11  lation  and  maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
    12  as dedicated pursuant to section one of this  act,  provided  that  such
    13  signing  shall  state  "Highway  Dedicated to Police Officer Frederick G
    14  Maley". However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption
    15  of commerce, the dedication called for pursuant to section one  of  this
    16  act  shall  be  one  of  ceremonial nature and the official name of such
    17  highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
    18    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
