TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to Trooper Gerard B. Kane
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
Dedicates a portion of the state highway system to Trooper Gerard B.
Kane.
 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
344-s. Portion of the state highway system to be dedicated to Trooper
Gerard B. Kane. The bridge over the eastbound and westbound lanes of the
Southern State Parkway on Udall Road in the town of Islip, county of
Suffolk, shall be dedicated to Trooper Gerard B. Kane.
2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation
and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as dedi-
cated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that such signing
shall state "Bridge Dedicated to Trooper Gerard B Kane". However, to
avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the
dedication called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one
of ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be
changed as a result of this act.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Trooper Gerard B. Kane, along with his partner Trooper Arthur B. Reddy,
died instantly on November 15,1937 when their automobile stuck a tree
while responding to a report of criminal mischief to equipment used. to
build the Parkway system on Long Island. Their car left a dirt road
adjacent to Deer Park Avenue in the Town of Babylon. He was thrown from
the open touring car as it struck a clump of trees. This legislation is
to pay tribute to Trooper Gerard B. Kane for his honorable and heroic
service.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-s to
2 read as follows:
3 § 344-s. Portion of the state highway system to be dedicated to Troop-
4 er Gerard B. Kane. The bridge over the Southern State Parkway on Udall
5 Road in the town of Islip, county of Suffolk, shall be dedicated to
6 Trooper Gerard B. Kane.
7 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
8 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
