NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY
MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION
submitted in accordance with Assembly Rule III, Sec 1(f)

BILL NUMBER: A1456

SPONSOR: Byrne (MS)
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating the "Atomic Veterans Memorial Bridge"   PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To designate a pedestrian bridge on the Taconic State Parkway within the Town of Yorktown as the "Atomic Veterans Memorial Bridge."   SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section One: Amends the highway law to designate a pedestrian bridge across the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of Yorktown as the "Atomic and Nuclear Veterans Memorial Bridge." Section Two: Designates the commissioner of transportation to provide installation and maintenance of adequate signing for the bridge Section Three: This act shall take effect immediately.   JUSTIFICATION: Between 1945-1963 the United States conducted approximately 235 nuclear tests. During this time, at least 220,000 American service workers participated in these tests, or served in the United States military forces occupying Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These atomic veterans may have been exposed to radiation during their service, and due to their exposure may have developed cancer or other medical conditions later in life. This legislation seeks to ensure their dedication and sacrifices are recognized by designating a heavily traf- ficked overpass bridge in their honor to commemorate their service.   PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: A9988b of 2019-20   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: Cost of Signage.   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
