MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION

  TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the state law, in relation to establishing congressional districts; and to repeal article 7 of such law relating thereto   PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to establish 26 Congressional districts in and for the State of New York.   SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill would provide metes & bounds descriptions of 26 Congressional districts.   EXISTING LAW: This bill would amend the State Law to provide for the reapportionment of the New York State Congressional districts.   JUSTIFICATION: This bill establishes new Congressional districts for the State of New York. It is based on population figures derived from the 2020 Federal Census. The districts comply with the United States and New York State Constitutions and the requirements of the Federal Voting Rights Act.   LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
