Assembly Resolution No. 263

BY: M. of A. Sillitti

HONORING Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long
Island Jewish Medical Center, upon the occasion of
being the first person in the United States to
        receive the COVID-19 vaccine

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed individuals within the medical
community for their extraordinary and sustained contributions to the
progress of medicine and the improvement of life; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, upon
the occasion of being the first person in the United States to receive
the COVID-19 vaccine; and

WHEREAS, Sandra Lindsay always knew that she wanted to become a
nurse; even as a child she helped take care of her grandmother in
Jamaica, before immigrating to the United States 30 years ago; and

WHEREAS, A true hero throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Sandra
Lindsay has served as the Director of critical care nursing at the Long
Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, New York, since 2016; and

WHEREAS, When the pandemic first hit New York hard in March of 2020,
this extraordinary woman led a team of hundreds of critical care nurses
as they coped with the influx of critically sick patients; and

WHEREAS, With recent and lingering skepticism of the COVID-19
vaccine, even among some of her own staff, Sandra Lindsay understood the
example she could provide, especially to people of color; she further
understood the legacy of unequal and racist treatment and
experimentation on people of color, and knew she could provide
inspiration for others; and

WHEREAS, Today, Sandra Lindsay continues to lead her staff in caring
for the sickest patients while promoting the vaccine which signifies
hope, relief, healing, and the beginning of the end of a very dark time
for all of her fellow and noble healthcare workers across the state,
nation and world; and

WHEREAS, In the faithful performance of her duties and
responsibilities, Sandra Lindsay's ongoing efforts and notable
achievements have significantly contributed to bettering the quality of
life in her community; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Sandra Lindsay has continuously
displayed initiative and an unrelenting commitment when pursuing the
highest of goals, and she has truly served as a role model of leadership
to be emulated by all; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center,

upon the occasion of being the first person in the United States to
receive the COVID-19 vaccine; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sandra Lindsay.
