Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) is sending his “July Grants Action News Update” to residents, organizations and local governments about a series of grants available from the state, federal government and private entities. Each month, the Assembly provides an updated list of grants for a variety of categories. “During a time of economic recovery, grants can play an integral part in helping our local communities complete needed infrastructure repairs or support under-funded projects,” said Palmesano. “Many people don’t realize the scope of available opportunities because they aren’t sure where to look. The ‘Grants Action News’ bulletin makes finding these grants much easier by consolidating the information and making it available to everyone. I hope residents, organizations and local governments throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions will be able to use this resource to find much-needed support to strengthen communities in our rural area.” The Grants Action News bulletin is updated at the beginning of each month with newly-available grants and information on how to apply. State Grants

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Transportation Alternatives Program, Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program NYSDOT is making available up to $100 million in funding to support bicycle, pedestrian, multiuse path and transportation-related projects and programs that help meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act. These funds are provided through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ).

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include local governments, regional transportation authorities, transit agencies, natural resource or public land agencies, tribal governments, local or regional governmental transportation or recreational trail entities and NYSDOT (for CMAQ only).
Funding: A total of $100 million is available, with $56 million for funding under TAP and $44 million for funding under CMAQ.

Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections, Thinking for a Change (T4C) Facilitator Program This program offers training and staff development in Thinking for a Change (T4C), an integrated cognitive behavioral change program. The program is comprised of 25 lessons taught by trained facilitators and comes with materials that can be used to craft an aftercare program to meet ongoing cognitive behavioral needs of offender groups

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Division of Public Programs, Media Projects, Development and Production Grants The Media Projects program supports film, television and radio projects that engage general audiences with humanities ideas in creative and appealing ways. All projects must be grounded in humanities scholarship and demonstrate an approach that is thoughtful, balanced and analytical (rather than celebratory). Film and television projects may be single programs or a series addressing significant figures, events or ideas. Programs must be intended for national distribution, via traditional carriage or online distribution.Development grants should result in a script (for a film or television project) or a detailed treatment (for a radio or podcast project) and may also yield a detailed plan for outreach and public engagement in collaboration with a partner organization or organizations. Production grants support the production and distribution of films, television programs and radio programs or podcasts that promise to engage a broad public audience.

Eligibility: Any U.S. nonprofit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) status is eligible, as are state and local governmental agencies and Native American tribal governments. Independent producers who wish to apply must seek an eligible organization to sponsor the project and submit the application to NEH.
Funding: Typical awards for development grants are between $40,000 and $75,000. Typical awards for production grants are between $100,000 and $650,000.

Private Grants

Global Lyme Alliance, Research Grant Award Program Global Lyme Alliance encourages proposals for the 2018-19 Research Grant Award Program that explore regulation of Lyme disease and other tick-borne disease pathogenesis, with an emphasis on the role of an individual’s microbiome as well as genetic and epigenetic factors that might inform a “personalized medicine” approach to treatment. Grants will be awarded in support of innovative research efforts in areas that include but are not limited to antimicrobial development, personalized medicine, identification and continuing treatment of Lyme, new diagnostic technologies and the ecology of emerging tick-borne diseases.

Eligibility: Applications are accepted from investigators at academic, not-forprofit institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
Funding: Small-scale grants between $50,000 and $100,000; full-scale grants, up to $175,000 per year to be spent over the course of a two- to three-year period.

A-T Children’s Project, Research Grants The A-T Children’s Project provides research grants to assist scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) and finding a timely cure, or life-improving treatments, for this serious disease. Funding supports innovative, novel research approaches performed by rigorous scientists in a costeffective way. Their greatest interest is in funding translational and clinical research projects, particularly those projects focused on the neurological problems faced by all patients with A-T.

Eligibility: Proposals from young investigators, established principal investigators and clinicians, scientists from other disciplines and individuals are encouraged, from academia as well as industry. Scientists from the U.S. and around the globe are welcome to apply.
Funding: Up to $75,000 per year for a maximum of two years.
Deadline: Letter of intent due by August 1 for September 1 full application deadline.

Scholar Awards

Foundation for Physical Therapy, Florence P. Kendall Post-Professional Doctoral Scholarships The Kendall Post-Professional Doctoral Scholarships assist physical therapists and physical therapist assistants with outstanding potential who are in their first year of post-professional doctoral degree studies. The $5,000 awards are given to meet tuition expenses or academic fees associated with a doctoral program.

Eligibility: Applicants must possess a license to practice physical therapy or have met all the requirements for physical therapy licensure in the U.S. or in a U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants also must be enrolled as a full- or part-time student in a regionally, fully accredited postprofessional doctoral physical therapy program and be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
Funding: $5,000 per recipient.

Universities Space Research Association (USRA), Scholarship Program Universities Space Research Association offers four scholarship awards to undergraduates working on a B.S. or B.A. in science and engineering with an emphasis on space research or space science education and aeronautics-related sciences, including the life sciences.

Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at a four-year accredited college or university and be within two years of earning a B.S. or a B.A. in a field of science and engineering related to space research or space science, including life sciences and science education, by the time the award is received.
