McDonough Demands Gov. Sign Bill Giving Equal Protections to Private School Students

McDonough was early originator of bill requiring private schools to report sexual abuse

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is demanding that Gov. Cuomo immediately sign into law a crucial bill that would require private schools to report allegations of sexual abuse. Currently, only public schools are mandated to report such allegations.

McDonough was the early originator and champion of this requirement and introduced the legislation implementing the reporting requirements before a current version seamlessly cruised through committee and both houses of the Legislature with his guidance.

“This is a common-sense, bipartisan bill offering long-overdue protections for hundreds of thousands of young students across our state,” McDonough said. “Students who attend private school should have the same voice as any other student in New York, and this dangerous loophole is giving predators an avenue to silence their victims and it must be corrected immediately. I am calling on the governor to sign this legislation into law by the Thursday deadline and do what is right to protect our students!”

As covered by the NY Daily News on Wednesday, A student at Chapin School in New York City recently collected over 11,000 signatures requesting that Gov. Cuomo, who has until Thursday to sign the bill into law, do so.
