McDonough Opposes Driver’s Licenses for Illegals Passed by Assembly Majority

Ranking Minority politician of the Assembly Transportation Committee takes a stand as Assembly Majority passes the highly unpopular legislation

“This week’s vote was a disturbing first step in passing unpopular legislation that signals a dangerous message to society – breaking the law is met with rewards instead of consequences in New York.

“This is a slap in the face to every law-abiding citizen and legal immigrant who has done the right thing, played by the rules and obtained a driver’s licenses the right way.

“It’s concerning that Assembly Majority is more interested in offering shortcuts and leniency rather than enforcing accountability and consequence for those who have broken the law.

“How can we be sure someone who is here illegally to begin with will all of a sudden choose to follow the rules and responsibilities that come with driving, obtaining insurance and registration and learning traffic laws?

“I voted against this bill and will continue to stand for law-abiding, middle class citizens, rather than illegal immigrants.”
