Assemblyman Colton and South Brooklyn Coalition for Quality Education Continuing Their Fight

Assemblyman Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights) on September 12, 2018 with concerned parents had formed the South Brooklyn Coalition for Quality Education (SBCQE) to keep SHSAT in place. I am a longtime supporter of the Specialized High School Admission Test and very happy to learn that another coalition been formed and is led by minister and former Brooklyn Tech alumnus Kirsten John Foy, “The Education Equity Campaign”, which has been funded by Robert Lauder, chairman of the Clinique Laboratories a former Bronx High School Science alumnus, and by a former Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” “so Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza must remember the importance of improving education, before they continue with any further action in eliminating the Specialized High School Admission Test,” stated Colton.

“I have been and will be continuing to oppose the Mayor’s proposal to eliminate the SHSAT until I prevail. We can’t let bureaucrats destroy the future of our children, simply because they are the future of our great country,” Colton said.

Colton has introduced Bill A-4818 in the Assembly requiring gifted and talented classes be provided in every school district throughout the city. Colton says the SHSAT is not the problem; the problem is the failure of DOE to give children the opportunity to do well on the test.

Assemblyman Colton in conjunction with the South Brooklyn Coalition for Quality Education (SBCQE) to KEEP SHSAT will be conducting a meeting on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., 29 Bay 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11223. The press and everyone are welcome to join us to show their support in our fight.
