Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, I, WF – Forestburgh), Chair of the Assembly Mental Hygiene Committee, announced today that Governor Andrew Cuomo last night signed into law her legislation to remove the requirement of prior notice for inspections of facilities operated and/or licensed by the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (A.6992-A).

“This is an important piece of legislation aimed at protecting people with developmental disabilities and providing a level of comfort to their families,” said Assemblywoman Gunther.

A minimum of two inspections are required annually under current law – at least one of which is unannounced. The new law would not increase the total number of visits, but, instead, would remove the requirement of prior notice.

“While many facilities maintain exceptional standards, my hope is that by removing prior notice, more facilities will maintain inspection standards year-round,” said Assemblywoman Gunther. “The health and safety of people with developmental disabilities is a top priority.”
