Assemblywoman Gunther Announces Local Library Construction Grants

Monticello, NY – Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D,I,WF-Forestburgh) today announced that public libraries in the 100th Assembly District will be receiving over $300,000 in public library construction grants. The funds are from $14 million in capital funds for public library construction provided in the 2013 State Budget.

“Libraries play an invaluable role in our communities,” said Assemblywoman Gunther. “These grants will help make them more accessible, energy efficient and comfortable. I commend the library directors and boards of trustees for their incredible work. I’m proud to support their efforts.”

A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $2.2 billion. More than 48% of the over 1,000 public library buildings in communities across New York are over 60 years old. Another 30% are more than three decades old. Many of New York’s local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient, cannot provide Internet and computer and other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring, and do not have sufficient space to house the library’s expanding collection, address the need for adequate meeting room, or provide for public access computers.

“This is great news for the Mamakating Public Library,” said Library Director Greg Wirszyla. “These funds will help with the costs of construction for our new home, making the library an even greater asset for the community. I want to thank Assemblywoman Gunther for supporting our libraries and for her tireless advocacy on our behalf.

  • Ethelbert Crawford Public Library - $70,104 for renovations to the new building, including addressing ADA accessibility requirements;
