Goodell Calls for Greater Funding To Support Developmentally Disabled

Signs bi-partisan letter to Assembly Speaker asking for his support

Assemblyman Andy Goodell (R,C,I-Chautauqua) joined Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D,I,WF-Forestburgh) and a vast majority of members of the Assembly in a bi-partisan effort to restore funding for programs that support and serve those with developmental disabilities. This crucial funding was reduced by $240 million in the governor’s budget proposal.

“Since these cuts were proposed, my office has had an overwhelming response from friends and families of those with disabilities who would be negatively impacted by the changes,” said Goodell. “Many of these vulnerable individuals rely on services provided every day of their lives. These cuts will mean parents could be forced to quit their jobs to care for their children full time, and elderly parents would bear a tremendous burden caring for grown children unable to support themselves. In addition, the ripple effect of these cuts would be catastrophic, including the loss of employment for many hardworking men and women who have devoted their lives to our most vulnerable citizens.”

Since the 2008-09 fiscal year, agencies have continued to receive funding cuts during the budget process. According to the budget put forth by the governor, these agencies would receive another six percent cut this year.

“Providing adequate funding for our most vulnerable citizens and their caregivers isn’t a partisan issue but an issue of humanity and protection. The services provided aren’t luxuries but necessary to protect the health and safety of those in need,” concluded Goodell.
