Today, Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello (R,C,I,Ref-Niagara Falls) joined Assemblyman Ed Ra (R,C,I-Franklin Square), Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo (R,C,I,Ref-New Suffolk), Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan and fellow legislators at a press conference calling on lawmakers to pass common sense amendments that would rectify serious concerns regarding bail reform measures enacted in this year’s state budget. The bail reform measures have raised concerns regarding the safety of communities due to the inability of judges to hold criminals after arrest. The conference’s proposed amendments would eliminate this restriction, ensuring dangerous criminals are held in custody until sentencing.

“Earlier this year, the majority prematurely passed numerous criminal justice reforms without knowledge of how they would affect public safety,” said Morinello. “The proposals unveiled by our conference today are about correcting this flawed legislation to keep dangerous criminals behind bars and ensure the safety of our communities. If passed, our amendments would narrow the scope of current criminal justice law, and allow judges to hold dangerous criminals in custody until their day in court. I applaud efforts by our conference to rectify this legislation, and urge lawmakers in both houses to pass it into law before the end of session.”
