Assemblyman Santabarbara Introduces Legislation That Will Allow a Home Heating Cost Deduction on State Income Tax Returns
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced new legislation that will allow New Yorkers to use their heating bills as a tax deduction on their yearly state income tax returns.
“After a challenging two years, New Yorkers are now facing inflation and the rising cost of necessities such as food, gas and utilities,” said Santabarbara. “That’s why I’ve introduced new legislation that will allow our families to use the expense of heating their homes as a tax deduction. During this period of economic recovery, we must continue to find ways to help hard-working families save money.”
The bill would allow taxpayers to deduct their home heating costs on their state income tax returns. In a recent survey, the Siena College Research Institute found gas, food and utilities expenses were a concern for between 76-87% of all New Yorkers. Heating your home is an essential need; this legislation would help New Yorkers offset some of those costs, noted Santabarbara.
