Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara at 518 Common Unity Cup

The second annual 518 Common Unity Cup commenced in style at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Schenectady, coinciding with the city’s National Night Out celebration. With the aim of promoting community cohesion and active engagement among local youth, this month-long event offers five nights of free community gatherings featuring exciting sports competitions.

Only in its second year, the 518 Common Unity Cup has quickly become a much-anticipated event in Schenectady. This year, it promises to be bigger and better, building on the success of its inaugural edition. Each week, community members have the opportunity to team up with police officers, firefighters, and elected officials in a sporting event, fostering a sense of camaraderie and trust between the community and its first responders. These events are much more than just sports competitions; they serve as platforms for fostering a sense of community, encouraging collaboration, and instilling important values in the young participants.

The event’s opening night was electrifying, with a packed crowd cheering on the athletes of all ages in the dodgeball competition. The captivating lineup of events throughout the month ensure that the excitement doesn’t dwindle. This week, Hillhurst Park in Bellevue hosted a thrilling volleyball competition, attracting players and spectators alike. Central Park will be the venue for an exhilarating softball game on August 17th, followed by an action-packed kickball game at Jumpin’ Jack’s in Scotia on August 24th. The grand finale, a flag football game, is set to take place at Schenectady High School on August 31st.

Throughout the month, the 518 Common Unity Cup aims to create lasting memories for the participants and spectators, leaving a positive impact on the community. By promoting an active lifestyle and fostering community spirit, the event exemplifies the significance of coming together, regardless of age, background, or profession. Residents, businesses, and community leaders have shown their wholehearted support for the Common Unity Cup, providing valuable resources and volunteering to ensure the success of each event.

Thanks to the many esteemed supporting organizations including the City of Schenectady, Schenectady Police Department, Schenectady Fire Department, Schenectady City School District, The Schenectady Foundation, C.O.C.O.A House Inc., Lucid Voices, Restorative Mindset Inc., and Conqr Fitness, Common Unity continues to expand community outreach, bringing joy and camaraderie to every corner.

Event Coordinator and my good friend, William Rivas, says it’s all about building relationships, and fun. Will has been working to improve police-community relations for years and make life better for Schenectady residents. He is also the founder of the community group Save our Streets, and has been behind numerous holiday food drives, holiday gift giveaways, and basketball tournaments. The 518 Common Unity Cup is an extension of those efforts.

I believe the 518 Common Unity Cup has ignited the spirit of togetherness in Schenectady. This year, combining the celebration of National Night Out with these thrilling sporting competitions, the event has become a beacon of unity and community engagement.

As the festivities continue over the course of the month, let’s continue to celebrate the power of sports and community by coming together in the upcoming events that are sure to be filled with togetherness and healthy competition. I eagerly look forward to witnessing the transformative power of sports and community spirit in action. This annual gathering showcases not only sporting talents but also the strength of our community bonds.
