Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Introduces Bill to Simplify Vehicle Registration Process in New York State

Proposal would allow a one-time, lifetime registration for non-commercial vehicles

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced today the introduction of new legislation aimed at simplifying the vehicle registration process for non-commercial vehicles in New York State.

Under this bill, once a vehicle is registered, owners will no longer need to renew their registration semi-annually. Instead, the registration will remain in effect until the title of the vehicle is transferred. This change will reduce administrative burdens for both vehicle owners and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), resulting in cost savings and a more streamlined process.

“New Yorkers have long expressed frustration with the time and expense involved in periodically renewing their vehicle registrations,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. “This legislation is a common-sense approach to make owning a vehicle more convenient and less costly. It eliminates the need for bi-annual renewals for non-commercial vehicles, allowing owners to focus on what matters most—safe and responsible driving.”

The bill includes provisions to ensure that all fees, taxes, and any other charges associated with the vehicle are all paid in full at the time of registration. This ensures a more efficient system for vehicle owners.

“By eliminating unnecessary paperwork and reducing the frequency of DMV visits, this legislation will not only save time and money for drivers but also make our state government more efficient,” added Santabarbara. “I’m working to making life easier and more affordable for the hardworking people of New York State, and this bill is another step in the right direction.”
