Assemblyman Santabarbara’s 2025 Student Cabinet to Discuss School Funding & Education Equity
High school students from across the 111th Assembly District to analyze New York’s school funding formula and budget challenges
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s 2025 Student Cabinet will meet for the first time in Schenectady to engage in hands-on policymaking discussions about school funding and budget priorities. With the Foundation Aid formula currently under review for potential reconfiguration, students will examine how state funding impacts their schools and work to develop their own budget proposals.
The Foundation Aid formula determines how education funding is distributed to school districts across New York State. As the state considers adjustments to address disparities and improve funding equity, this discussion is particularly relevant for ensuring adequate resources for special education programs and students with disabilities.
Students representing six Capital Region school districts, from both urban and rural areas, will participate in interactive budget exercises, making decisions on state aid, local revenue, and funding allocations. They will also have the opportunity to defend their budget proposals in a simulated policymaking discussion, gaining real-world experience in how government decisions impact education.
