Assemblyman Santabarbara Announces Enactment of School Speed Zone Camera Program in Schenectady
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced today that his bill (A07669) to establish a School Speed Zone Camera Demonstration Program in the City of Schenectady has been signed into law.
The legislation creates a pilot program allowing the City of Schenectady to install speed cameras in designated school zones to improve safety for students, families, and pedestrians.
The initiative will enable automated enforcement in areas where speeding has been a persistent concern, helping to reduce dangerous driving and prevent accidents.
“This bill is about protecting our kids,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “Too often, we hear concerns from parents and school officials about drivers speeding through school zones. These cameras will serve as a strong deterrent and a reminder to slow down where it matters most – near our schools.”
The legislation reflects years of collaboration with local leaders, law enforcement, and community advocates who have worked tirelessly to make Schenectady’s streets safer.
“With this program now becoming law, we can take meaningful action to protect children and families in our community,” Santabarbara added. “It’s a common-sense step that will save lives and give parents peace of mind.”
The demonstration program will authorize Schenectady to implement and evaluate the impact of school speed zone cameras, providing valuable data for potential statewide expansion.
