Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced the launch of an on-line petition for legislation he is sponsoring in the State Assembly that would expand animal cruelty laws. The bill was introduced after two Montgomery County dogs were shot and killed during a burglary over a year ago and is still an unsolved case. The measure was named “Kirby & Quigley’s Law” in the dogs’ memory with support from the Krohn family who have turned their personal tragedy into something positive, advocating for passage of this law. “I’m fighting for this law in the loving memory of Kirby and Quigley, in support of the Krohn Family, and in the name of innocent animals who have no voice,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “We can often replace a stolen or lost item, but nothing can replace the pets that are part of our family.”

The legislation ensures that criminals with disregard for innocent animals are charged with felony animal cruelty in addition to their other crimes, punishable with 2 years in jail and a $5,000 fine. The bill has been gaining momentum in the State Assembly, passing unanimously through the Assembly’s Agriculture Committee earlier this year and now having more than 100 co-sponsors. “Now, I’m encouraging all New Yorkers to show their support for this bill and be a voice to the innocent animals that do not have one,” Santabarbara added. “Those who think they can get away with these horrendous crimes must be held accountable, and together we can make sure they pay for these unconscionable crimes.”
