Adopt the Purple Heart parking designation today!

The award known as the Purple Heart has a history that reaches back to the waning days of the American Revolution. It's one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces. Today, there are an estimated 1.8 million Purple Heart recipients, combat wounded service members, who have transitioned back into civilian life.

Chartered by Congress in 1958, The Military Order of the Purple Heart is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal. Although our membership is restricted to the combat wounded, they support all veterans and their families. Having served in the U.S. Army Reserve, as a past Commander of AmVets Post 35, and now on the State Assembly's Committee on Veterans' Affairs, I'm proud to partner with our local communities to support our veterans.

That said, I began working with local municipalities, businesses and organizations to bring the Purple Heart parking designation to areas across my Assembly District in recognition of service members wounded in combat. Similar to handicap parking spaces, these parking spots are reserved for those who have bravely fought for our country and have been wounded in combat.

The idea is catching on! A growing number locations have adopted this unique purple parking space as a tribute to all those wounded in combat serving our country.

These spots serve an important purpose. Purple was chosen as the color of the parking spaces in honor of the Purple Heart. They make life a little bit easier for those who have sacrificed fighting for our freedoms and are also a well-deserved salute to wounded veterans; A daily reminder to remember the brave men and women who serve our country - not just on holidays, but every day.
