Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced a number of redevelopment and revitalization projects that will now move forward in the City of Amsterdam with $194,400 in state funding.

The City of Amsterdam will complete a Brownfield Opportunity Area Nomination for a 129-acre area with 9 potential re-development sites in the East End neighborhood and a 309-acre area with 35 potential sites in the Northern neighborhood. $97,200 in funding will be at each location to address environmental and physical challenges as well as social and economic impact.

The funding will come through the Brownfield Opportunity Areas and Cleanup program. Brownfields are abandoned or underutilized properties where known or perceived contamination has become an obstacle to redevelopment projects, turning these properties into environmental and economic drains on an area.

“As a civil engineer, I know first-hand how brownfield sites can be transformed and help revitalize our upstate communities,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “With this funding we are breathing new life into these areas and bringing new economic opportunity”, Santabarbara added. “Here in Amsterdam, we continue to see the effectiveness of the brownfield program and how important it is to continue this funding in this year’s state budget.”
