Dollar Store Crayons Test Positive for Asbestos
School supplies shouldn't put kids' lives at risk
"It was troubling to see reports that Playskool crayons sold at Dollar Tree stores recently tested positive for asbestos, a known carcinogen that can lead to severe health complications. Sadly, this isn't the only recent discovery of harmful chemicals in consumer products. Tests have found high levels of lead in since-recalled children's water bottles, traces of phthalates in binders and benzene in markers.
"Shopping for back-to-school supplies should be a fun way for kids to get excited about the upcoming school year. Parents should never have to worry that local stores will be selling products that contain toxic chemicals or are unsafe for their little learners.
"Protecting the health and safety of our families has always been my top priority. In the Assembly, I sponsored legislation to prevent the use of dangerous chemicals in children's products (A.8266) as well as co-sponsored and helped pass legislation that would prohibit the use of the harmful pesticide chlorpyrifos (A.10274). We also passed a state budget that includes $2.5 billion for the Clean Water Infrastructure Act, ensuring New Yorkers always have access to clean and safe drinking water. And together with our neighbors in the Capital Region, I successfully fought against a sewage plant in Glen. We cannot compromise when it comes to our health; we must do all we can to keep toxins away from our children, families and environment."
