Assemblyman Santabarbara’s Statement on Recent Study That Links Weed Killer to Cancer Found in Kids' Cereal, Oatmeal
More must be done to ensure products are safe for kids and families
“In an alarming trend, there’s yet another report about consumer products containing dangerous chemicals. In this case, children’s cereals among other popular items found in local supermarkets,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, who received a perfect score from the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) for his legislative work on environmental issues.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently analyzed foods and cereals – many of which are marketed to children in local supermarkets – and found unsafe levels of glyphosphate, a chemical used to kill weeds that’s been linked to cancer.

“Eating cereal in the morning is a family tradition, a lifelong breakfast staple that families eat together as part of breakfast before heading off to school and work in the morning. As parents, the last thing we could imagine is that the most important meal of the day could be putting our kids’ health at risk. As a father of two, this news is deeply troubling and must be addressed immediately,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “We can’t let reports like this become the norm. It’s time to act and ensure there are stronger protections to keep dangerous chemicals and toxins out of our food, water and the products we depend on every day. There is legislation we can pass right now that can put a stop to this! In the New York State Assembly I’ve sponsored bills that puts the health of our families first, including (A.10274) that would stop the use of the harmful pesticides in our food. There’s nothing more important than the health of our children and our environment.”
