Assemblyman Santabarbara: Amsterdam Moves Closer to Breaking Ground on Church Street Reconstruction

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara applauded the Amsterdam Common Council for moving forward with its plans to renovate Church Street. The Assemblyman has secured nearly $1 million in funding for the long-overdue project.

“Despite numerous delays, I’m happy to see the city of Amsterdam move forward on this important work,” Santabarbara said. “By updating the 2018 engineering study, the city will be better prepared to make these renovations a reality. Church Street serves as an important corridor connecting us to other major upstate regions and is also used by local families and small businesses each and every day, making it critical that we complete this project as soon as possible.”

In 2018, Assemblyman Santabarbara secured a $900,000 State and Municipal Facilities Program grant from the state Dormitory Authority for the Church Street construction project.[1] On Tuesday, the Amsterdam Common Council approved a resolution to update the engineering study for the now long-delayed $1.9 million project.

With a background in civil engineering, Santabarbara has delivered state funding to address aging infrastructure and public safety concerns in upstate New York, creating an the Emergency Infrastructure Repair Program in 2017 and securing a number of state grants from the Dormitory Authority for districtwide infrastructure projects. He authored a five-point plan in 2018 to address quality-of-life and safety concerns of residents along the Church Street corridor. “By investing in infrastructure projects now, our communities can improve traffic safety and avoid costly repairs down the road,” noted Santabarbara.
