The New York State Athletic Commission Board recently announced an approved plan permitting professional-amateur boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts throughout the state.

“As we begin to rebuild from the devastating economic effects of COVID-19, we must find new ways to generate revenue and support the economy,” Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara said. “MMA events here in Schenectady have proven to be a boon to the local economy. The addition of pro-am competition to take place will only build off that success."

As a key supporter of Assembly efforts to legalize and regulate MMA in 2016, Santabarbara introduced a bill earlier this year aimed at achieving the Commission's recent pro-am events approval (A.4561). By establishing these regulations now, the state Athletic Commission has taken a step towards creating the framework needed as we prepare for the re-opening of this popular sport here in New York State, noted Santabarbara.

MMA has been a significant economic generator for the state, producing almost $100 million within the first two years after the ban was lifted. In addition to state revenue, local economies have also benefited from hosting these events. Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady has hosted multiple high-profile MMA events, providing a boost to the casino as well as to the surrounding small businesses.
