Men’s National Health Month

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbra talks with local health experts about the importance of early detection and being awareness to preventable health conditions and diseases.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time devoted to bringing awareness to preventable health conditions and disease while encouraging healthy habits and early detection and treatment of illnesses.

This month, I partnered with our local Cancer Services Program to discuss obstacles to men’s health and associated risk factors. Watch the video above for more information on staying healthy.

In nearly every age group, men are at a greater risk for death. Oftentimes this can be related to risky behavior, poor diet and exercise, mental illness, or workplace injuries. Although some risks are not easy to avoid, others can be addressed through healthier habits such as cancer screenings, eating a balanced diet, and regular exercise. Lifestyle changes can make all the difference in the world to your own health and positively impact your loved ones.

Some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  1. Eat a balanced, nutritious diet
  2. Exercise at least 150 minutes each week
  3. Schedule an annual physical exam
  4. Don’t put off your prostate exam – a blood test is also available for this
  5. 50 or older, begin colorectal health screenings
  6. Schedule an annual physical exam
  7. Consult your physician to address your specific risks
