Astoria, NY – On Monday, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas honored local students who successfully completed the 2013 ‘Summer Reading Challenge’. Each summer, Simotas hosts this challenge for local students to read every day and provides them with an age appropriate reading list and a calendar to mark their progress.

Simotas’ program encourages students to delve into books and embrace reading outside of class. “Strong reading skills are the foundation of an effective education, and programs like this inspire students to really appreciate good books and spend time reading and learning during the summer months,” Simotas said. “I developed my love of reading in school with lots of encouragement from my parents, and I hope the Summer Reading Challenge encourages the same excitement for these students,” Simotas explained to this year’s honorees.

After receiving their official certificates, the students shared with Simotas about their favorite books and classes at school, as well as their ambitions. “These bright young people are proof of the power of reading,” said Simotas. “Education breeds success, and encouraging reading among our community’s youth is a great way to ensure that the next generation is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
