Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Up-Stand Kick-Off World Breastfeeding Week and Urge Support for Family Accommodations Bill
On August 1, 2018, the start of World Breastfeeding Week, Astoria residents held a Latch-on event to support nursing mothers and drive support for Assemblymember Aravella Simotas bill, the Family Accommodation in Entertainment Act.
The event was jointly sponsored by Assemblymember Simotas with Christine Serdejian Yearwood, the founder of Up-Stand, an Astoria based pregnancy rights organization. Simotas said, As a mom who experienced this joy with my own daughter I know how critical this nurturing practice is to families. But there is much more we need to do as a society to support breastfeeding and even to make this choice possible.
Guest speakers at the event were Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Councilmember Costa Constantinides, Assemblymember Nily Rozic and Councilmember Donovan Richards.
