Assemblyman Jones to Prioritize Correctional Officer Safety, Support for Agricultural Industry In 2022
Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay Lake) announced that he will prioritize improving safety in the correctional system and increasing support for New York farmers during the upcoming 2022 legislative session.
“In addition to tackling statewide issues like our economic recovery, I’m focused on addressing the issues that matter most to North Country families,” Assemblyman Jones said. “As a former corrections officer, I know firsthand how difficult and dangerous this critical job can be, and I’m working to pass a range of bills that improve safety and address the root causes of violence. As a former dairy farmer, I also am concerned about the current problems farmers are facing. That is why I’m fighting to pass legislation that helps farmers navigate this current economic crisis and thrive going forward.”
Improving Correctional Facilities
Since he was first elected to the Assembly, Jones has been committed to improving safety in state correctional facilities. To further enhance safety in state prisons, Jones is sponsoring legislation to ensure these facilities only provide plastic or compostable eating utensils in dining areas (A.493). Many facilities have already banned metal utensils following violent incidents and this new measure would make this long-overdue change a statewide policy. Jones also co-sponsored a bill that would establish a temporary state commission to complete a two-year study and make recommendations on violence in state correctional facilities, with particular focus on addressing the increase in the levels of violence since 2013 (A.7588). “The recent spike in violence at state correctional facilities is unacceptable and the state must ensure the safety of all workers in these facilities,” Jones said.
Supporting Our Farmers
Growing up on a dairy farm, Jones knows the long hours and dedication that go into the production of farm-fresh foods and is committed to ensuring all farmers get the critical support they need to thrive. To support farmers and a host of other small businesses, he is fighting for legislation that would require 20% of all products purchased by a state agency or private entity performing state contracts to be New York State products (A.8433). This bill would increase production and help create new jobs and small businesses at a time when our economy is still in recovery. Jones is also sponsoring legislation to ensure only products containing 100% milk can use the term “milk” on their labels and advertisements (A.507). This measure will support New York’s dairy industry and ensure nondairy alternatives aren’t benefitting from dairy-based advertising or misleading consumers. “New Yorkers love fresh and local food,” Jones said. “It’s important that we do everything we can to support New York’s farmers and keep this historic industry alive in our state.”
