Assemblyman Jones: Budget Extender Allows State to Operate While Deliberations Continue
“While I had hoped the Legislature would pass a budget before the April 1 deadline, an agreement remains elusive. Today, I helped pass a budget extender that prevents a state government shutdown while negotiations continue.
“This was a last resort, but it was a necessary one. Here in the North Country, an extender means that teachers and correction officers will continue to get paid, and that state facilities will remain open. Law enforcement can continue to keep our communities safe, schools and hospitals will stay open, and programs to assist the most vulnerable members of our community will stay intact.
“A budget extender is a temporary fix and doesn’t offer a comprehensive picture of the upcoming year’s fiscal priorities. However, it will allow us to iron out differences over contentious policy issues and make sure the budget deal is the best agreement possible. As budget talks continue, I’ll fight to ensure the final agreement fully funds our local schools, creates incentives for our small businesses, and invests in the North Country economy and in much-needed infrastructure projects.”
