Assemblyman Jones Celebrates a Century of Supporting Local Veterans with American Legion Post 1418

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Plattsburgh) was joined by local legislators, veterans and supporters to celebrate and honor the Salmon River/Fort Covington American Legion Post 1418 on the national organization’s 100th anniversary.
“American Legion Post 1418 has helped create a community that uplifts and supports North Country veterans through programs, fundraisers and events,” said Jones. “There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than to celebrate all the lives this remarkable organization has touched over the past century. I’m grateful to commemorate this organization on its centennial alongside some of those heroes and I look forward to seeing what the future brings.”
Jones was joined by Franklin County Legislator Paul Lauzon and former Franklin County Majority Leader Guy “Tim” Smith at the event. The American Legion was chartered by Congress on Sept. 16, 1919, with the goal of providing support to returning veterans and local youth and promoting patriotism. Since being chartered, the American Legion has expanded to over 13,000 posts worldwide and over 2 million members. As a veteran’s organization, their service is often unrecognized, but the American Legion provides a lifeline to many veterans and their families, Jones noted.
