Assemblyman Jones Secures Funding for OATS in 2021-22 Budget to Help Older New Yorkers Stay Connected

“Over the last six years, OATS has significantly impacted the lives of North Country seniors and helped many of our neighbors access the internet and improve their computer skills,” said Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay Lake). “That is why I fought to secure $200,000 in the 2021-22 state budget for Senior Planet. The COVID-19 pandemic has only highlighted the importance of high-speed broadband to keep everyone connected to our loved ones and allow us to work, learn and attend telehealth appointments. Access to services from Senior Planet is perhaps now even more critical for older New Yorkers, who, over the last year, have had to remain isolated for the sake of their health.”

The 2021-22 state budget included $200,000 in funding for the Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) Senior Planet North Country, which supports programs across our region that help older adults access and use broadband technology. Jones noted that he will continue to advocate for this vital organization that has helped older adults remain in touch with their loved ones and keep up with the constantly changing technology.

"We thank Assemblyman D. Billy Jones for securing this additional year of funding in the New York State FY-22 budget and continuing to be a fierce advocate for older adults in his district. Year after year, Assemblyman Jones has shown unwavering support for OATS and helped to ensure funding despite looming budgetary constraints," said Senior Planet New York State Program Manager Marco DiGirolomo. "During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the essential role that digital engagement and socialization play in the lives of older adults. As we move into the next phase of 'normal,' we look forward to continuing to provide Senior Planet programming to North Country seniors."
