Assemblyman Brian Maher Joins Local Leaders and Veterans to Dedicate Highway to WWII Hero Jack Barletta

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C-Walden) joins veterans, community leaders, state officials and the family of the late Staff Sgt. Jack Barletta at Veterans Memorial Park in Maybrook to honor his service and officially dedicate a portion of State Route 208 in his name. The legislation, signed into law earlier this year, memorializes the lifelong sacrifices and leadership of the beloved World War II veteran.

The dedication ceremony brought together representatives from Sen. Rob Rolison’s office, the New York State Department of Transportation, local leaders and dozens of residents whose lives were touched by Barletta. The law to name the highway was jointly sponsored by Sen. James Skoufis in the Senate and Assemblyman Maher in the Assembly.

Staff Sgt. Barletta enlisted at 19 and served courageously in both Italy and France. After leading a critical reconnaissance operation in Salerno, he later carried a wounded soldier off the battlefield in France, where he stepped on a landmine—an injury that ended his military career. His bravery earned him multiple honors, including two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a New York State World War II Medal and recognition from the French government.

Beyond his military heroism, Barletta dedicated his life to serving others as commander of the Maybrook VFW and as a steadfast leader in his community.

“Jack Barletta is one of the most patriotic Americans who has ever lived, and I am so proud to have played a role in memorializing his lifetime of service to our country and to his community. Jack Barletta was honored on the very first Hudson Valley Honor Flight, which flew to Washington, D.C. in June of 2012. The Honor Flight family will always remember him, and this memorial highway will ensure countless New Yorkers and Americans will know his name,” said Maher.

The newly dedicated “Staff Sergeant Jack Barletta Memorial Highway” stands as a reminder of extraordinary courage, sacrifice and lifelong commitment to service. Local veterans emphasized that Barletta’s name will now be seen by thousands of New Yorkers each day, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations to live with duty and honor.
