New York Assemblymember Dan Quart released the following statement on today's almost unanimous passage of A05667A, his bill to end discriminatory gravity knife prosecutions:
Todays sweeping vote is a clear sign that reform to our inequitable and antiquated gravity knife law is necessary and urgent. Over the past decade, an estimated 60,000 New Yorkers, the vast majority of them Black or Latino, have been arrested and prosecuted for owning a knife they purchase at a local store and use for work. Its time to stand up for working New Yorkers who are being charged with a criminal offense for simply carrying a job-related tool. This is common sense legislation and I urge Governor Cuomo and the State Senate to support this legislation and prevent unnecessary prosecutions.
