Supreme Court Decision Undermines Essential Rights for LGBTQIA+ Community
New York, NY – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision on 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis that will have far-reaching, negative implications for the LGBTQIA+ community. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of a Colorado designer who refused to create custom wedding websites for same-sex couples. By ruling in favor of the Colorado designer, the justices clarified an unresolved issue in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission of whether businesses open to the public and engaged in expression can decline to serve customers based on religious beliefs.
In response to this ruling, Assembly Member O'Donnell said: “The Supreme Court's decision is a devastating & unnecessary step backward that will allow businesses to turn away customers simply because they are part of the LGBTQIA+ community."
He added: "Discrimination has no place in our society, and we will not rest until every member of the LGBTQIA+ community has the same protections and opportunities as everyone else."
