Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora) has adamantly opposed a proposal to site wind turbines in the Great Lakes region. A report on the feasibility of the project released by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) found no benefits to these potential projects; noting that the Great Lakes wind does not offer a ‘unique, critical or cost-effective achievement of New York state’s Climate Act goals.’ The report went on to blame the lack of data relating to the distribution of wildlife across the Great Lakes as a reason not to pursue the project for fear it would endanger the wellbeing of local wildlife species, and potentially the 11 million New Yorkers who get their drinking water from the Great Lakes.

“I’m relieved to see that after two years of deliberation and consideration of the environmental, economic and social issues surrounding the potential siting of wind turbines in Lakes Erie and Ontario, the commission has rightfully concluded that the potential financial and environmental costs of this endeavor far outweigh the benefits,” said DiPietro. “The fact that the commissions were made up of primarily pro-green energy advocates says a lot about the political nature of the pro-green energy politics wreaking havoc in Albany. Renewable energy is not a one-size-fits-all solution to our state’s energy crisis. As lawmakers, both Minority and Majority alike need to be aware of the impacts these projects can have on our state on all levels. Only then can we make the best decisions for New York and our fellow residents.”
