Celebrating Service and Commemorating Sacrifice

Memorial Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by the courageous men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. To all of our veterans past and present, I extend my deepest gratitude for your service and your willingness to put your lives on the line to protect our freedoms.

During my time in the New York state Assembly, I have made it a priority to honor and support our veterans in every way possible. I have sponsored legislation aimed at easing the financial burden on those who have served, including bills that exempt veterans from having to pay for hunting and fishing licenses, provide free dental care for veterans in Western New York, exempt certain veterans from the state income tax and establish property tax exemptions for veterans.

In addition to this legislative work, I have also worked diligently to ensure the legacy of our fallen heroes is never forgotten. Over the past several years, I have collaborated with the Department of Transportation to dedicate over a dozen roads, bridges and highways to veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. It is a profound honor to be able to cement their memories in such a permanent and meaningful way.

One of the most humbling experiences of my tenure was being chosen as the regional distributor for the Zeldin Cares program. Through this initiative, we were able to deliver essential winter wear to homeless veterans, providing them with warmth and comfort during the harsh winter months. It was a small gesture, but one I hope brought some solace to those who have sacrificed so much for us all.

I have also had the privilege of presenting veterans with Certificates of Merit as they received their Quilts of Valor. These quilts are not just blankets, they consist of three layers. The top layer, made up of many colors, shapes and fabrics, represents the diverse communities and individuals that make up our nation. The center, or batting, is the filler, the warmth that embraces and comforts. The third layer, the backing, holds the entire quilt together, just as our veterans have held our nation together through their unwavering service.

Finally, I must acknowledge the tireless efforts of my mother, Elaine DiPietro, who served as the Blue Star Memorial Chairperson of the National Garden Clubs. I was honored to help her dedicate Blue Star Memorials across Western New York, recognizing those who have served and sacrificed for our country. These memorials can be found in national cemeteries, parks, VFW posts and gardens, and serve as a reminder of the debt we owe to our veterans.

Remember to honor the fallen this Memorial Day and support those who have served. We owe an unpayable debt to the veterans who have fought for the ideals of freedom, justice and democracy they have so valiantly protected.
