Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora) delivered a powerful speech in defense of his pro-life views during today’s debate on the Women’s Equality Act. Unlike the Senate, which split up the 10-point package into 10 separate parts, the Assembly took up the package, nine points of which largely have bipartisan support, as one omnibus bill despite the tenth plank being a controversial abortion expansion measure.

“Nine of the 10 planks of the Women’s Equality Act are favorable, but to make this an omnibus bill rather than a piecemeal approach was a political tactic,” DiPietro said. “I will not cast a vote that will sentence another 110,000 infants to death. Life must be protected from natural conception to natural death. The government must protect the most essential natural right: life.”

Assemblyman DiPietro has drafted Assembly Bill 7254 alongside Senator Patrick Gallivan in working to establish the Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act. DiPietro’s remarks included a description of the surgical abortion process and the development of the infant in the womb during the time where an abortion can be performed. Since Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973, there have been over 50 million abortions in the United States, with 41 percent of New York City pregnancies ending prematurely in abortion. In the past year, 110,000 abortions were performed in New York State.

The State Senate has agreed to split the bill into 10 separate bills to be voted on in a piecemeal approach. For any of the 10 bills to become law, the same process must be applied in the Assembly. Because this is the last week of this year’s session, this process will not occur, ultimately making this legislation from the Assembly dead on arrival.
