DiPietro: Protecting Future Mothers

Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C,I-East Aurora) has introduced a bill this week that would criminalize an assault on a pregnant woman. Currently, the laws that govern harm to a pregnant woman are covered under reproductive health. DiPietro’s bill would expressly recognize the woman as a victim of the attack and increase the penalty for assault to a felony.

“Assault on pregnant women is an absolute tragedy and they deserve more protection,” DiPietro said. “I am fiercely proud of this bill to finally grant them specific protections under the law. Tragedies like Livia Abreu's assault that led to the loss of her child need to be averted in the future. I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that assaults like the one she suffered never happen again.”
