Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) announced today that he will be selecting a constituent between the ages of 12 and 17 to attend one of four state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) summer environmental education camps free of charge. Children interested in the camp program must write an essay of between 300 and 500 words explaining why they want to attend the camp and how the environment is important to them. Essays must be sent to Assemblyman McDonough at 404 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore, NY 11710 no later than April 15. “This summer camp program is a great opportunity for a child from my district to experience all the wonderful wildlife and environmental resources New York state has to offer,” said Assemblyman McDonough. “While I can select only one individual to attend for free, I encourage anyone interested in this event to participate.” The camp program is in its sixty-first year of providing residential conservation education for young New Yorkers. Children are immersed in conservation education at the weeklong camp, attending ecology workshops, and participating in fun activities and games that teach wise use of natural resources. The camps, open to children in age groups of 12 to 14 and 15 to 17, are held during July and August at four sites: Colby, near the village of Saranac Lake in Franklin County; DeBruce, in the southern Catskills near the village of Livingston Manor in Sullivan County; Rushford, in the Genesee River Valley in Allegany County; and Pack Forest, north of Warrensburg in the southern Adirondacks.
