Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I – Merrick) today announced that Nassau County will now be included in a New York State Department of Labor plan which will provide assistance to unemployed New Yorkers looking for jobs. The plan, paid for by the federal Workforce Investment Act, will give 20 non-rural counties $6,250 each for them to distribute to county residents searching for jobs.

“I am glad to see that Nassau residents are finally being given some attention as they too look for jobs,” said McDonough. “With the collapse of Wall Street and the New York economy, thousands of Nassau residents, including many people in my Assembly District, have been affected and are now feeling the financial pinch. I believe this assistance will be very much appreciated by the individuals and families struggling to get by during these tough times.”

In order to receive transportation assistance, workers should contact their local One-Stop Career Center for additional information and specific eligibility requirements. The funds made available by the Department of Labor to each county are to help pay transportation expenses for unemployed workers to access services at One-Stop Career Centers, apply for jobs, attend interviews and receive training. These funds can be used for the purchase of gas cards, swiper cards, or reimbursement of mileage or public transportation expenses.
