Biography

Assemblymember Diana C. Moreno

Diana Moreno is proud to represent the 36th Assembly District in Queens, which includes the neighborhoods of Astoria and Long Island City. She assumed office on Feb. 4, 2026, less than twenty-four hours after winning a special election.

Like many of her neighbors, Diana is an immigrant New Yorker. Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, she comes from a working-class family of teachers, bus drivers, and union organizers. When Diana was 11 years old, her family made the heartwrenching decision to immigrate to the United States to escape a neoliberal financial crisis. Witnessing her parents face exploitation and discrimination at work due to their immigration status inspired Diana to become a labor organizer and immigrant rights advocate.

She got her start unionizing faculty and graduate students, protecting the rights of migrant farmworkers and their children, and organizing immigrant workers as an intern for Make the Road New York. Diana continued this work at New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), where she organized undocumented workers in Queens to fight against wage theft and successfully advocated to pass workplace safety legislation for construction workers. Most recently, Diana worked for the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), where she supported union nurses and healthcare workers to win fair contracts and defend access to healthcare.

Diana has spent years volunteering her time to organize for causes she cares about and to serve her community. She started free English classes at Astoria Food Pantry, helped organize to stop the proposed NRG fracked-gas power plant in Astoria, and engaged in civil disobedience protesting the genocide in Gaza and blocking the entrance for ICE vehicles at 26 Federal Plaza.

In 2024, Diana became a mother to a beautiful son, who she and her partner are raising in the heart of Astoria. Diana believes that as a mamá, she has a duty to fight—not just for her child's future, but the future of every child and every working-class family.
