Assemblymember Barrett: Assembly Budget Proposal Would Create Carbon Farming Pilot Program
Farming is an essential part of the upstate economy, especially here in the Hudson Valley. But in the face of the growing threat posed by climate change, we must transition to more sustainable, eco-friendly practices to ensure our family farms can continue to thrive for generations to come.
After working with several advocates and experts in the field of regenerative agriculture, my groundbreaking carbon farming pilot program has been included in the Assemblys budget proposal. Carbon farming refers to agricultural practices that remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the soil, where it increases crop production and improves soil health and resilience. This pilot program will provide important results to help farmers, scientists, and policymakers find climate solutions and improve the productivity of our states agricultural businesses.
While including the pilot project in the Assembly budget proposal is an important step forward, I know that our work is far from over. Ill work with our Senate partners and the governor to ensure this program becomes law.
