Finch At Capitol Press Conference: End START-UP NY

June 10, 2015

Today, Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C,I-Springport) renewed his call for the suspension of New York’s priciest misnomer: START-UP NY. Finch joined his colleagues at a press conference just off of the Assembly floor to state their case against the controversial economic development program.

Recently, START-UP NY was targeted in a scathing audit by the comptroller for racking up $211 million in advertising costs while generating “no tangible” benefits.

In his remarks, Finch noted that these economic gimmicks create an uneven playing field, one that hurts New Yorkers who are working hard to grow established enterprises. He noted that a similar Empire State Development program hurt a local manufacturer, Auburn Vacuum Forming, by offering tax breaks to an out-of-state competitor to relocate.

Finch reiterated his commitment to simple, sound economic policy.

“The only thing chillier than our winters in New York is our frigid business climate,” said Finch. “Stifling regulations and punitive taxes are discouraging job creators from investing in our communities, especially upstate. The governor needs to realize that short-term tax gimmicks and gaudy advertising campaigns are no replacement for real economic development.”
