Assemblywoman Sillitti: Supreme Court’s Decision on Concealed Carry Law Undercuts Efforts to Prevent Gun Violence
“After the devastating mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas and the daily gun violence that leaves heartbreak and ruin in its wake, it’s clear that the scourge of gun violence is ever present. Sadly, the U.S Supreme Court has now overturned a 1913 New York law which required applicants for concealed carry permits to demonstrate ‘proper cause’ that goes beyond general safety concerns. This decision is a disaster for New York and will almost ensure more guns will flood our public spaces. As the Court continues to pursue an extremist philosophy, New York is taking action.
“Earlier this year, the people’s house passed a 10-bill legislative package to address loopholes in current law and help prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. This includes measures to strengthen our red flag law, raise the age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle to 21, make it unlawful to sell or possess bulletproof vests for most individuals and, create a new crime of making a threat of mass harm.”
