Assemblymember Harvey Epstein and Senator Kristen Gonzalez Unveil NYCHA Media Tech Lab at Straus Houses
New York, NY – Today Assembly Member Harvey Epstein and Senator Kristen Gonzalez unveiled a new Media Technology Lab at Straus Houses. Partnering on this initiative, the two Manhattan elected officials set out to ensure that residents had a means by which to access the internet, which is critically important to accessing job resources, homework, banking, telehealth, and a variety of other resources. Although equipped with Wi-Fi, many NYCHA residents lack the devices necessary to access the internet.
The digital divide, the gap between those who have access to the internet and technology and those who do not, disproportionately impacts socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. This situation becomes particularly acute when discussing the Homework Gap, a term coined by Federal Communications Chair Jessica Rosenworcel to describe the 17 million U.S. students who cannot complete their homework due to a lack of internet and technology access. Knowing that every student, regardless of background, deserves an opportunity to succeed, Assembly Member Epstein and Senator Gonzalez are on a quest to make sure every New Yorker is “plugged in” to the opportunities that await them through access to a Media Tech Lab.
“We can build a stronger, more engaged community when we work together to make sure that everyone is lifted,” said Assembly Member Harvey Epstein. “NYCHA residents often face systemic barriers when trying to access resources. In an increasingly online world, access to the internet is critical to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I am proud to fund this effort which will help Straus Houses pursue educational and career opportunities in addition to acquiring vital resources.”
"As the chair of the Senate Internet and Technology committee, I am proud to have fought, and continue to fight, for the digital rights of our citizens. This media tech lab is a step forward in ensuring that internet access, a necessary tool for participation in our modern world, is a right for all, not a privilege for some," said Senator Kristen Gonzalez.
“Harvey has been with our development every step of the way. I am delighted to work with him and Senator Gonzalez on this media tech lab opening. With the recent opening of this community room and now a tech lab, we have a space for young people to come, enjoy themselves, and access the internet” said Janeika Davenport, Community Board President for Straus Houses.
“This new lab will be the start of a new era for us here at Nathan Straus Houses. This media tech lab will allow residents to learn new things, complete their annual recertifications, and job search. I would like to thank Assembly Member Epstein, Senator Kristen Gonzalez, and John Blasco who made this possible” said Elsie Otero, TA President for Straus Houses.
