Assemblyman Skoufis Announces Plans to Revitalize Vern Allen Park

July 1, 2018

Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced that plans to revitalize Vern Allen Park in the Village of Washingtonville are moving forward. The improvements were developed by a local committee of officials as well as residents and will be funded through a $125,000 Assembly grant that Skoufis is obtaining.

“Washingtonville residents are going to see an exciting transformation at Vern Allen Park,” Skoufis said. “Not only will there be a variety of new amenities available at the park, but village residents will have a true community hub. I thank the committee members for their work on developing a dynamic proposal.”

Late last year, Skoufis convened a local committee to advance a plan for the park upgrades. Their recommendations include a splash pool, bocce courts, a dog park, a pavilion, and fountains for the often-stagnant ponds. The plan also updates the playground and creates a multi-use sports space for pickleball, handball, and basketball.

The project will now move forward for vetting and is expected to be ready for the summer of 2019.

“Assemblyman Skoufis is helping us breathe new life into the neighborhood,” Washingtonville Mayor Joseph Bucco said. “This park will be a shared backyard where residents throughout our community can gather with their friends and family to enjoy the outdoors.”
