Resources and programs for veterans

Assemblymember Lunsford passed laws that supported Veterans through the budget:

  • $8 million to the Dwyer Peer-to-Peer Veterans Support Program
  • $3.5 million in restorations for various veterans' programs
  • Nearly $5 million in capital and federal funding for the State Veterans Cemetery
  • $500,000 in support for homeless veterans
  • $100,000 to the Lawyer For a Day program, which provides free legal counseling to veterans
  • $250,000 appropriation restored for Veterans Outreach Center
  • $500,000 to NUCOR House, which helps veterans transition into independent living

Established the Iraq War Commemorative Medal and the Afghanistan Iraq War Commemorative medal for members of the armed forces serving abroad in the Iraq War or the Afghanistan War (Ch. 609 of 2023, Ch.610 of 2023)

Ensured that a deceased veteran is given the respect they deserve by requiring a county to contact a veteran's organization when a deceased veteran has no next of kin to claim their remains (Ch. 620 of 2023)

Expanded protections for those exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Indochina (Ch. 506 of 2022)

Directed the state to launch a public health campaign to help remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental distress and substance abuse among veterans (Ch. 363 of 2022)
