DeStefano Joins Call to Increase Penalties for Sexual Offenses Committed against Correction Officers
A Statement By Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford)
“Hearing the stories from women who have experienced worsening working conditions following the implementation of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act is yet another example of why pro-crime legislation is bad for New York. Our correctional officers are now forced to work alongside incarcerated individuals who know there are no consequences for their inexcusable actions. This is a losing situation for everyone involved. COs deserve better, they have a right to do their jobs without the threat of harm, just like everyone else in this state. I’m pleased to see bipartisan support in addressing this major issue—bill A.1606 will create stronger laws that will better protect correctional officers and will help in the prosecution of those who abuse them.”
