Assemblyman DeStefano Calls for Increased CHIPS Funding to Strengthen Long Island’s Infrastructure
Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) announced his continued commitment to securing additional funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) as a critical step toward maintaining and improving the infrastructure across New York state, particularly on Long Island.
CHIPS, which provides crucial funding for the repair and maintenance of local roads, bridges and highways, has long been a cornerstone in the state’s efforts to ensure safe and reliable transportation for communities across New York. However, with rising costs and the continued need for improvements, DeStefano is calling on Governor Hochul to allocate more resources to this vital program.
“Our local roads and bridges are the backbone of our economy and vital to the safety of every resident on Long Island,” said DeStefano. “Unfortunately, for too long we have seen the infrastructure we rely on deteriorate due to insufficient funding. It’s time to prioritize our communities’ safety and invest in the future of our state.”
As the cost of construction materials, labor, and maintenance continues to rise, municipalities are increasingly finding it difficult to maintain local roadways. CHIPS funding, which helps municipalities offset these costs, is more important than ever. However, current funding levels are not enough to keep pace with the growing demands.
DeStefano is advocating for a substantial increase in CHIPS funding to ensure local governments on Long Island can address necessary repairs and upgrades. This funding will not only improve road safety but will also create jobs and promote economic development across the region.
“Long Island’s roads and highways are critical to our daily lives, from commuting to supporting our local businesses. It’s essential we invest in their upkeep to ensure the safety of our residents and strengthen our local economy,” added DeStefano. “I urge Governor Hochul and my colleagues in the Assembly to recognize the importance of this investment and allocate more funds to the CHIPS program.”
DeStefano is committed to working with local leaders, transportation experts and residents to ensure Long Island receives the funding it needs to keep pace with the demand for road repairs and infrastructure improvements.
